Liberal Cemetery (northwest of town)
Type: Bronze Soldier Statue
Description:
Granite monument surmounted by a bronze soldier statue, the
soldier at parade rest. The front of the base of the statue
is inscribed: "Comrades ~ 1861 - 1865". The back of the base
is engraved: "This Statue Was Restored ~ And Rededicated In
1994, ~ To All Veterans Who ~ Struggled Throughout ~ The
World, In All Wars, To ~ Preserve Those Liberties ~ We Hold
So Dearly".
Above this inscription are the emblems of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Army National
Guard, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of Confederate
Veterans, and the Seward County Historical Society.
An associated small stone plaque reads: "The American
Legion And ~ Veterans Of Foreign Wars ~ Contributed Greatly
To ~ The Restoration Of This ~ Monument In 1994".
A small bronze medallion, inscribed with: "Civil War
Memorial Restoration ~ Comrades 1861 - 1865 ~ Liberal,
Kansas 1993", is mounted on the base of the flagpole next
to the statue.
