Type: Stone Monument

Description: This stone monument was originally constructed in 1867 by soldiers of the 3rd US Infantry. It was dedicated to the soldiers who died while serving their country at Fort Larned. The only remaining legible inscription reads: "J.B. McIntyre Col. USA Died at Fort Larned Kansas May 9, 1867. Was one of the officers, of Extra Duty Maintained the Honor of His Country (Gallantly) During the Days of the Recent Rebellion."

The post went inactive in 1878, the monument was moved to the Larned Cemetery in 1886, and the 65 soldiers interred here were moved to Fort Leavenworth and reburied as Unknown. Sixty two of these have since been identified and a plaque mounted both at the original Fort Larned Cemetery and the burial area at Fort Leavenworth. This plaque reads: "Dedicated to the soldiers who died while serving their ~ country at Fort Larned, Kansas (1859-1878). ~ In 1888, remains were relocated from the post cemetery ~ to Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery, Section B, ~ where they were not identified. Among the men who ~ perished at or near Fort Larned and whose remains may ~ now be buried at Fort Leavenworth are: (62 names) ~ In addition to the above soldiers, others who are unknown remain here along with ~ some 40 civilians who perished at or near Fort Larned. Little Heart a Cheyenne ~ brave is the only known Indian to perish at Fort Larned."

A rededication ceremony was held on October 11, 2009 to rededicate the cemetery and return the monument to its historical location. Members of todays 3rd US Infantry participated in the ceremony.

Description: A 12-pounder Mountain Howitzer, M1835 is on display as an interior exhibit in the Fort Larned National Historic Site museum (interior exhibit).

Type: Granite Monument

Description: The inscription on the base reads: "Memorial Dedicated By ~ Tony Asher Post 300 ~ Garfield American Legion". Above that is inscribed: "Civil War . Spanish American War . World War I . World War II . Korea . Viet Nam".

The large stone on the left is inscribed: "Let Us Not Forget ~ The Men And Women Who Served ~ Our Country In The ~ Armed Forces And Are Now ~ Resting In Garfield Cemetery ~ {names}".

The small stone on the right is inscribed: "Died In The Service Of Their Country ~ {names}".

Type: Cannon

Description: The cannon is on a concrete mount, outside the Sante Fe Trail museum. The cannon is bronze 10-inch siege mortar. The inscription on the concrete mount dedicates the site to the Mormon Battalion and their actions near here in the 1840s.

A nearby bronze marker describes the actions of the Mormon Battalion, who camped at this location on 8 September 1846.

Description: The concrete base of the flagpole has embedded bronze seals for "B.V. Larned ~ Post 8 ~ GAR Kans", "Spanish War Veterans", "Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States", and "American Legion".

Description: This cut stone pyramid has three bronze plaques. The lower plaque reads: "Veterans ~ Memorial ~ Lest We Forget ~ Dedicated By ~ B.F. Larned Post 8 ~ Grand Army Of The Republic ~ Frederick Browne Post 280 ~ Burdett American Legion & Auxiliary ~ Walter S. Chears Post 106 ~ Larned American Legion & Auxiliary ~ Jack H. Kkreiger Post 7271 ~ Larned Veterans of Foreign Wars & Auxiliary ~ Tony Asher Post 200 ~ Garfield American Legion & Auxiliary".

The center plaque reads: "In Memory Of ~ Those From Pawnee County ~ That Sacrificed Their Lives To ~ Protect Their Country, This ~ Land Of The Free-Home Of The Brave ~ Spanish American War ~ (names) ~ World War I ~ (names) ~ World War II ~ (names) ~ Korean Conflict ~ (names) ~ Vietnam ~ (names)".

The top plaque reads: "America's ~ Wars - Conflicts - Casualties ~ Am. Revolution 4,000 ~ War of 1812 2,000 ~ Mexican War 13,000 ~ Civil War Confederate 134,000 ~ Union 364,000 ~ Spanish-American War 11,000 ~ World War I 116,000 ~ World War II 406,000 ~ Korean Conflict 55,0000 ~ Vietnam 58,000".
